Incidence and mortality rate due to pulmonary thromboembolism in deceased patients of the surgical services of “Aleida Fernández Chardiet” Hospital

Background: pulmonary thromboembolism is a significant condition that entails discussion. It has a high degree of suspicion, mainly in risk situations.
Objective: to determine the incidence and mortality due to pulmonary thromboembolism in patients of the surgical services of the “Aleida Fernández Chardiet” Hospital from January 2011 to December 2016.
Methods: a longitudinal observational and retrospective descriptive study was carried out. The annual rates of incidence and mortality, per 10000 individuals, due to pulmonary thromboembolism were determined in patients of the surgical services of the aforementioned hospital during the period herein declared. The diagnosis of pulmonary thromboembolism confirmed by necropsy was used.
Results: the incidence rate of pulmonary thromboembolism in that hospital has been on the rise, from 27,3 in 2011 to 220,1 in 2016. The mortality rate in the surgical services increased from 53,6 to 235,3 in 2015, decreasing to 97,4 in 2016. There was a prevalence of the male sex, between 60–79 years of age, and of the white skin.
Conclusions: the incidence and mortality due to pulmonary thromboembolism were determined in the study population.Downloads
