Elements converging in the professional communicative competence in English of health professionals

Background: the uniqueness of the communicative act of health professionals in English has been insufficiently described; the aspects that converge in their professional communicative competence have not been determined.
Objective: to determine the elements that converge in the professional communicative competence in English of health professionals.
Methods: a research was carried out between April 2020 and March 2022, at the Faculty of Medical Sciences "Mariana Grajales Coello", University of Medical Sciences of Holguín. Divided into three phases, the first phase of the research identified the epistemological and methodological references that support communicative competence in English in general, and in the professional health context. The second phase set out the aspects that make up this competence and the third phase included an expert evaluation.
Results: the professional communicative competence in English of health professionals is specified in their areas: linguistics (lexical, grammatical, phonological and syntactic knowledge of the language consistent with the modes of professional performance), sociolinguistics (appropriate use of the formal academic language according to medical-professional and research ethics) and pragmatic (functional value to communication in the professional context). Experts showed consensus regarding the value of dimensions and indicators by skills to guide the evaluation towards the development of this competence.
Conclusions: the elements that converge in the professional communicative competence in English of health professionals were described and stratified in their linguistic, sociolinguistic and pragmatic areas; as well as their dimensions, where communication skills are integrated.
