Background: external otitis is one of the most common diseases that the general practitioner and the otorhinolaryngology specialist assist.
Objective: to describe some clinical and epidemiological characteristics in patients in the municipality of Las Tunas with external otitis, treated at the Dr. Ernesto Guevara de la Serna General Teaching Hospital, between January 2020 and January 2022.
Methods: A prospective longitudinal descriptive study was performed in patients declared in the objective and who were treated in the Emergency Service and the Outpatient Clinic of the hospital during that period of time. The sample was 379 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of the disease. Variables such as age, sex, level of schooling, etiological diagnosis and isolated germs were analyzed. The data was processed using descriptive statistics.
Results: the 19-45 age group predominated (66.75 %) and the male sex presented with a ratio of 1.5: 1. 51.45 % of patients were university students and 52.20 % presented associated diseases. 78.36 % of the cases reported otalgia. Otomicosis (35.62 %) and acute diffuse external otitis (31.39 %) were the most presented types. The most frequently isolated germs were Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus, with 54.07 % and 52.10 % respectively.
Conclusions: Otitis externa affected mainly young adults, with high school level and urban origin. Comorbidities and pathogenic characteristics of isolated germs may influence these results.
