Visual results in patients operated for cataract by facoemulsification technique

Background: cataract represents a psychosocial impact both for the ophthalmologic condition, as well as the impact on the social and economic life of the patient and the family.
Objective: to evaluate the visual results in patients operated for cataract by phacoemulsification technique
Method: an observational, descriptive and prospective study of cataract patients operated by the technique of facoemulsification was carried out at the Teaching General Hospital "Dr. Ernesto Guevara de la Serna" in Las Tunas from September 2021 to December 2023. The sample population consisted of 49 patients. The variables analyzed were: age, sex, general and ocular personal pathological history, best corrected visual acuity before and after surgery, preoperative and postoperative keratometry, and secondary complications due to the technique. The percentage and effectiveness of the technique were determined by calculating Mc-Nemar’s chi square, considering statistical significance when p 0.05.
Results: female sex and age group 40-59 years predominated. Hypertension, diabetes mellitus and primary open-angle glaucoma were the most frequent personal pathological history. The surgical technique allowed to improve the visual acuity better corrected, the postoperative keratometry showed no significant variations and there were few complications reported, with an incidence of immediate postoperative and transoperative ocular hypertension.
Conclusions: cataract surgery using the phacoemulsification technique proved to be effective, with better corrected visual acuity recovery, no significant astigmatism induction and minimal complications.
