Biostatistics as a Fundamental Pillar in the Advancement of Health Sciences

Abstract

Introduction: biostatistics is an essential discipline in the health sciences, as it transforms data into scientific evidence that directly impacts the quality of medical care and the formulation of health policies. Its application ranges from clinical research to public health, enabling informed and evidence-based decision-making.

Objective: this review article aims to analyze the role of biostatistics in the health sciences, highlighting its impact on research, clinical practice, and public health, as well as identifying challenges and future opportunities for its effective integration.

Methods: a bibliographic review was carried out, in English A comprehensive literature review was conducted, selecting scientific articles published in recent years that address the application of biostatistics in different areas of health. Databases such as PubMed, SciELO, and Google Scholar were used, with search terms like "biostatistics," "clinical research," and "public health".

Results: biostatistics has proven to be fundamental in the design of clinical studies, epidemiological surveillance, and the evaluation of health interventions. Its application has enabled the identification of patterns, risk prediction, and the optimization of healthcare resources. However, challenges such as the lack of adequate training among healthcare professionals and the need to integrate emerging technologies ethically and effectively were identified.

Conclusions: biostatistics is an indispensable pillar in the health sciences, whose impact goes beyond numbers to improve people's quality of life. Its integration into research, clinical practice, and education is essential to advance toward a future where evidence-based medicine is the standard.
