Background: traffic accidents are one of the leading causes of death worldwide. In Ecuador, road accidents remain a significant problem, with an average of 60 accidents per day, 6.5 of which result in fatalities. In the province of Tungurahua, traffic accidents increased in 2023, with 798 accidents recorded, reflecting a structural problem in road safety. Objective: traffic accidents are one of the leading causes of death and injury on public roads, making it essential to base this study on high-quality scientific evidence.
Methods: a literature review was conducted using widely recognized databases (PubMed, SciELO, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, Legis), ensuring access to peer-reviewed publications with rigorous methodology. Articles published between 2020 and 2025 were included. Studies in Spanish and English were also considered. Official reports from government agencies and international organizations on road safety and traffic legislation were consulted.
Conclusions: Ecuador has one of the highest rates of traffic accidents in the region, with an average of 60 accidents and 6.5 deaths per day in 2023. In the province of Tungurahua, 798 accidents were recorded between January and October 2023, reflecting an increase compared to previous years. Legal and forensic medicine plays a fundamental role in traffic accident investigations, allowing for the clarification of responsibilities and providing essential scientific evidence for the administration of justice.
