Risk factors for low birth weight in the province of Las Tunas, 2024

Background: The birth of a healthy child is an event traditionally celebrated in societies worldwide. However, for many families, the reproductive process can be a somber and dangerous experience, with associated morbidity, complications, and ultimately, the death of the mother, the infant, or both.
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of an educational intervention strategy addressing risk factors for low birth weight in women of childbearing age at the Guillermo Tejas Silva Teaching Polyclinic.
Methods: A quasi-experimental, pre-post educational intervention study was conducted. A single-stage cluster sampling (CSM) was performed from Group B1 (GBT# 1), resulting in the inclusion of 25 women of childbearing age from Group B8 (CMF 8) at the Guillermo Tejas Silva Teaching Polyclinic. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.
Results: The results showed that unfavorable socioeconomic conditions, maternal malnutrition, anemia, smoking, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, and vaginal infections and urosepsis were the most prevalent risk factors in the study. The most represented age group was 20 to 29 years, with 14 women (56%), followed by the 30 to 39 age group with 8 cases (40%).
Conclusions: The study concluded with a considerable increase in knowledge regarding the complications of low birth weight and a general increase in knowledge about the risk factors.
