Foundations: total edentulism significantly affects quality of life, impacting masticatory function, speech and psychosocial well-being. The main rehabilitation alternatives are removable and fixed prostheses on implants, with a controversy about which offers a better quality of life related to oral health.
Objective: to identify the factors that influence the quality of life related to oral health of rehabilitated dental patients with fixed prostheses on implants compared with conventional removable prosthesis.
Methods: a narrative review of the literature was conducted in databases (PubMed, Latindex, SciELO, LILACS). Studies were included that assessed oral health-related quality of life using validated instruments in total edentulous patients.
Results: evidence shows that implant prosthetics users report significantly better oral health-related quality of life (p<0.05). This superiority is observed in all domains of OHIP-14: masticatory function, physical comfort, self-esteem and social interaction. The stability of the fixed prosthesis is a key determinant.
Conclusions: patients with prosthetic implants have a better perception of their quality of life related to oral health. Dental implants should be considered a priority therapeutic option to optimize the comprehensive well-being of the patient, including the elderly population.
