Clinical strategies in the periodontal treatment of patients with Diabetes Mellitus for its control and prevention

Periodontal disease and Diabetes Mellitus have a two-way relationship that aggravates the evolution of both conditions when not properly controlled. Taking this into account the objective of the present research to analyze effective clinical strategies for periodontal treatment in diabetic patients, from the importance of glycemic control, patient education and interdisciplinary collaboration. A literature review was conducted using the PRISM method to collect information about periodontal disease and its influence in diabetic patients. The search for scientific articles was in databases: Pubmed, Scielo, Dialnet and other sources of information of interest. Findings indicate that non-surgical periodontal therapy improves systemic inflammatory status and may contribute to the control of blood glucose. the need for individualized protocols, continuous monitoring and reinforcement in oral hygiene is highlighted.
