Characterization of the patients with Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding in 2014 and 2015

Background: upper gastrointestinal bleeding represents a medical problem that significantly involves morbidity, mortality and a high use of public health resources nowadays.
Objective: to characterize the patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding admitted to the general surgery service of Guillermo Domínguez López General Teaching Hospital of Puerto Padre, from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2015.
Methods: a descriptive study was carried out on the patients diagnosed with upper gastrointestinal bleeding and admitted to the herein mentioned hospital in that period of time. The population included all the patients (97) in order to characterize the disease taking into account age, sex, causes, clinical presentation, type of treatment used and mortality.
Results: the 41 to 60 age group and the male sex prevailed. Bleeding duodenal peptic ulcer was the main cause. Melena prevailed as a form of presentation.
Conclusions: the medical treatment prevailed over the surgical one. The mortality of the series was low.Downloads
