Background: the use of contact lenses has increased worldwide. Nowadays its use is not only restricted to optical correction, but also to therapeutic purposes because they favor comfort and esthetics in multiple eye disorders.
Objective: to describe the results of the prescription of contact lenses in children, in the period from January to March 2016.
Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out with candidates to wear contact lenses who presented to the contact lenses service at “Mártires de Las Tunas” Provincial Children Hospital, in the province of Las Tunas, from January to March 2016. The universe and sample included 15 pediatric patients.
Results: 25 eyes were treated and the female sex represented 80 %. The 7 to 12 age group was the commonest one. Astigmatism was the most frequent disorder with 56 %. The contact lenses mostly ordered were the rigid-type ones. All the studied eyes significantly improved visual acuity with contact lenses.
Conclusions: there was a prevalence of astigmatism as a refractive defect in the contact lens patients who presented to the service. All the patients (25 eyes) who received contact lens testing improved their eyesight between 0.6 and 1.0. Rigid lenses were the most prescribed ones.
