Abstract

Introduction: information culture emerges from the prevailing cultural system, the use of good practices of information and knowledge, and its acquisition, is one of the most important missions of information institutions. This is the case here, based on the information skills of future medical professionals.

Objectives: to assess the information culture of the students of the Bachelor of Medicine

Method: a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out from August to November 2023, the universe was made up of 153 students, the sample was selected through a non-probabilistic intentional sampling that considered including those with less experience in the career, and the sample was made up of 74 undergraduate students.

Results: 68.91 % of the students reported knowing the term information culture, 41.89 % defined it as having access to information and 67.57 % replied that they have never received support from an information specialist to expand their information culture. 43.24 % showed that the most frequent teaching activity was class work using basic bibliography and 87.84 % never used reference works.

Conclusions: the diagnosis revealed that teachers lack the knowledge to teach students how to manage information, insufficient teaching activities aimed at training a student on information skills and promote information culture.
