COMMUNICABLE DISEASES, BIBLIOMETRICSAbstract
Background: neglected infectious diseases are a group of infectious conditions that affect more than one billion people in the world, mainly the poorest ones. In Latin America, its high incidence is the result of the poverty and marginalization of certain population groups.
Objective: to describe the scientific output on neglected infectious diseases in PubMed in Latin America.
Methods: a descriptive bibliometric study was carried out on the scientific output on neglected infectious diseases in Latin America by using the free search engine PubMed. The co-occurrence matrices were analyzed for the analysis of the social networks between authors and terms.
Results: 428 published articles were identified in journals indexed in this database. In the PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases journal 68 articles appeared. There is a trend toward increase of the scientific production on neglected infectious diseases. After the first article published in 2007 at least 2 articles were published per year, with a significant increase after 2012. The highest increase rates were in 2009 (166,67) and 2014 (133,33). According to countries, Brazil stands out with 282 articles and 951 authors.
Conclusions: during the studied period there was a sustained annual increase, even higher than the world increase in more than half the years.
