Five years of the Annual Health Prize contest in the province of Las Tunas

Background: the Annual Health Prize contest allows the dissemination of the results of Cuban biomedical scientific research; at the same time, it stimulates the scientific production in health sciences.
Objective: to describe the provincial event of the Annual Health Prize contest in Las Tunas, according to variables related to the registered works, in the period from 2013 to 2017.
Methods: a descriptive, retrospective, observational study of the aforementioned event was conducted. The reports and records of the registered works were reviewed. The bases established in the official announcements of the event were taken on. The works were analyzed by: categories, research lines, municipalities of origin. Descriptive statistics was used for the management of the data.
Results: a total of 72 papers were presented in the five years; there was a prevalence of the works in the categories of scientific article (37,5 %), applied research (26,4 %) and specialty completion works (19,4 %). Transmissible diseases, noncommunicable diseases and the introduction of new therapeutic lines (20,8 %), followed by training of human resources (18 %) and maternal and child health, sexual and reproductive health (15,3 %) were the research lines most represented. The municipality of Las Tunas presented 81,9 % of the works to the contest. There was a per-year increase of the number of registered works related to topics on the first causes of death and diseases of high prevalence in the territory.
Conclusions: variables related to the Annual Health Prize contest in the province of Las Tunas were described, marked by the progressive increase in the number and quality of the registered works.
