Necrotizing fasciitis: advances in treatment

This review article continues the topic of necrotizing fasciitis (NF) presented by the same authors in the previous issue. Necrotizing fasciitis is a fulminant infection of the soft tissues, characterized by an extensive and progressive deterioration of the surrounding tissues; it regularly progresses as a life-threatening condition. Early diagnosis, aggressive debridement and systemic antibiotics administration represent the mainstays to set the treatment for the patients suffering from this disease. In this regard, a bibliographic review article was carried out with the resources available in the Infomed network: PubMed, Hinari, The Cochrane Library and SciELO, MEDLINE and MedicLatina. The aim was to refresh the knowledge on the components of physical and medicinal treatment, as well as to present recent progress on cutaneous covering. Research works were gathered showing details on: procedures for the diagnosis, antibiotherapy, organ support intensive care, adjuvant treatment, immunological procedures and cutaneous covering. There was controversy on the management and the result obtained with several procedures, not keeping uniformity according to inter-observers, but there was agreement in the medical literature when pointing out that special attention must be paid to advanced diagnosis and to the time elapsed from admission to surgery, the latter being the most influential factor on the patient survival. The study makes emphasis on the importance to face up to this disease by means of a multidisciplinary team.Downloads
