Dental benefits of an educational strategy on tobacco smoking

Abstract

Background: tobacco smoking is one of the risk factors for oral cancer with a high prevalence in the population. Besides, it is a modifiable risk factor.

Objective: to assess the benefits of an educational program on tobacco smoking in the population of Doctor’s Office No. 28-01 of the “Guillermo Tejas Silva” Polyclinic of the municipality of Las Tunas, from July 2017 to February 2018.

Methods: an intervention study, based on an educational program, was conducted. The population consisted of 40 smokers, of the 35 to 59 age group, seen at the dental clinic of the aforementioned institution and during the period declared above. The established clinical variables were recorded. They were measured in two moments: before and after the application of the educational program.

Results: at the start of the intervention smokers did not manage much information on the risk of their habit, only 32,5 % classified as well-informed, 77,5 % were heavy smokers. At the end 75 % showed a good level of information and heavy smokers were reduced to 37,5 %. In 21 cases (52,5 %) a partial smoking cessation was achieved and 3 (7,5 %) quit it. 17 patients (42,5 %) could keep free from nicotine staining.

Conclusions: the educational program was effective. Partial and total cessation of tobacco smoking was confirmed with the decrease in the number of nicotine stains.
