Epidemiology of syphilis in the province of Las Tunas from 2009 through 2017

Background: syphilis is a reemerging disease in many countries either developed or developing. In Cuba and in the province of Las Tunas it has had an increasing tendency in the last years.
Objective: to describe the clinicoepidemiological characteristics of the incidence of syphilis in the province of Las Tunas from January 2009 through December 2017.
Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out. The study population was made up of the 1204 notified cases of syphilis in the province of Las Tunas during the period declared in the objective. The information was gathered from the charts of compulsory statement diseases and from the epidemiological surveys. The results were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics.
Results: the incidence rate of syphilis has increased significantly from 7,5 per 100000 inhabitants in 2009 to 60,7 per 100000 inhabitants in 2017. The disease was more frequent in the 25 to 44 age group, in the male sex (59,5 %) and in heterosexuals. There was a prevalence of the clinical early syphilis symptomatically acquired, with 59, 1 %.
Conclusions: syphilis has an increasing tendency in the province; predominating in sexually active ages and in recent clinical presentations.
