Keywords:
VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN, AGGRESSIONAbstract
Background: the worldwide prevalence of physical violence against women by their partners has increased compared to the nineties. In the country, there are no national studies on the prevalence of this problem.
Objective: to characterize physical violence against women caused by their partners in the province of Las Tunas, from January 2014 to December 2015.
Methods: a prospective longitudinal descriptive study was carried out with a sample of 69 women who reported being victims of physical violence by their partners, residents of the province and period of time declared in the objective. Epidemiological and medicolegal variables were assessed. The data were processed according to the descriptive statistics.
Results: more than half (75,4 %) of the abused women who made the complaint were included in the stages of youth and early adulthood; white women and those with secondary and pre-university education levels prevailed, with a greater incidence in the administrative center of the province. The most frequent type of injury was physical contact (50,7 %), with a medicolegal qualification of not serious requiring medical treatment.
Conclusions: characteristics of cases of physical violence against women caused by their partners in the province were described.
