Background: the plant Boldoa purpurascens Cav. (Nitro) has traditionally been considered useful for urinary tract diseases. It constitutes a therapeutic potential for the development of effective pharmaceutical forms.
Objective: to evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial effect of hydroalcoholic and aqueous extracts of the plant Boldoa purpurascens Cav.in the fimbria of Escherichia coli.
Methods: a pharmacognostic study was carried out with ethanolic extracts at 30 %, 50 % and 70 % of the foliaceous and flowering spikes of the plant Boldoa purpurascens Cav.The extracts were prepared according to the extraction technique. The fundamental parameters of quality control for raw drug and extractions were assessed. In the microbiological study the fimbria of Escherichia coli was assessed. The studies were conducted at the Provincial Pharmaceutical Laboratory of Las Tunas.
Results: both the foliaceous and flowering spikes have medium solubility in ethanol at 30 % and 50 %; the pH had values very close to the neuter for the hydroalcoholic extracts at 30 % and 50 % of both spikes, compatible with the physiology of the human organism. The total solids in the 50 % extracts showed better results. The same extract, at 50 %, showed, at phytochemical screening, the presence of amino group, phenols, tannins, triterpenes and steroids, until dilution 1: 4. There was inhibition of the fimbrial expression with aqueous and hydroalcoholic extract at 30 % and at 50 % of the flowering spike.
Conclusions: the aqueous and hydroalcoholic extracts of the flowering spikes showed antimicrobial activity in the fimbria of Escherichia coli.
