Background: laryngeal cancer is a disease with an increase in its incidence in Cuba during the last years. In the province of Las Tunas this worrying tendency is a fact.
Objective: to identify the main risk factors associated with laryngeal cancer in patients diagnosed with this condition and treated at the “Dr. Ernesto Guevara de la Serna” General Teaching hospital of the province of Las Tunas, from January 2016 to January 2017.
Methods: a case-control retrospective and analytical study was carried out with the patients treated at the department of otorhinolaryngology of the aforementioned institution and during the period declared in the objective. The sample was divided in a study group –the cases, with 92 patients and a control group with 184 persons (1:2). The following variables were analyzed: age group, sex, past medical history, family history of cancer and toxic habits. The probability distribution (OR odds ratio) was determined and tests of statistical significance were carried out in each studied factor.
Results: the 61 to 70 age group, the male sex, a past medical history of viral infections, leukoplakia, gastroesophageal reflux, hyperkeratotic chronic laryngitis, family history of cancer, exposure to toxic substances, as well as toxic habits (smoking and alcohol consumption) were the variables identified as risk factors for laryngeal cancer.
Conclusions: the risk factors for laryngeal cancer were identified in the studied population.Downloads
