Abstract

Foundation: there is a wide variability in the appearance of a scar after BCG vaccination. It has also been reported that there is an association between the BCG vaccine and a reduction of global morbidity and mortality.

Objective: to characterize the patients without BCG scaring treated at the immunology outpatient department of the “Dr. Ernesto Guevara de la Serna” General Teaching Hospital of Las Tunas, from January 2017 to January 2019.

Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out with patients treated at the immunology outpatient department, without BCG scaring on physical examination of the left deltoid region. The recorded variables were age, sex, place of residence, clinical manifestations, past medical history and results of the immunity-related investigations.

Results: 36 cases were studied, 61,1 % were females and 38,9 % were males. Only 36,1 % were under 10 years of age. Asthma was the most frequent condition in their history (33,3 %). Respiratory infections, both upper and lower, affected 80,6 % of the patients, and 16,7 % presented boils. Immunoglobulin A deficiency was the most common immune condition found in the sample (36,1 %).

Conclusions: respiratory infections, bronchial asthma and IgA deficiency were the predominant clinical conditions in the group of cases with no BCG scaring presented here. A larger sample of cases is required to explain the lack of optimal response to BCG immunization.
