Usefulness of ultrasonography in patients with nodular thyroid disease treated in a general hospital

Background: the main role of thyroid ultrasonography lies in its usefulness for the morphological characterization of thyroid nodules.
Objective: to characterize sonographically the patients with thyroid nodules treated at the "Dr. Ernesto Guevara de la Serna" General Teaching Hospital of Las Tunas, from May 2017 to July 2018.
Methods: a descriptive and prospective observational study was carried out in patients with a diagnosis of nodular thyroid disease, treated at the hospital and during the period of time declared in the objective. The sample consisted of 51 of these patients, older than 19 years, studied by ultrasound and with the result of TI-RADS 3-5, who were subsequently studied with fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC).
Results: nodular thyroid disease predominated in female patients (94 %), more frequent in the 46 to 55 age group (29 %). In the benign nodules, all with TI-RADS 3, the ultrasonographic signs that persisted were: predominantly cystic mixed internal content, complex echogenicity, thin halo, defined and regular margins, peripheral flow pattern and the size was wider than high. In the malignant nodules predominated: solid internal content, hypoechogenicity, absence of halo, ill-defined margins, microcalcification, the central flow pattern and the size was larger than wide. The FNAC showed that 72 % of the studied patients with TIRADS had benign nodular lesions and 27 % malignant lesions.
Conclusions: patients with thyroid nodules included in the study were sonographically characterized.
