Background: sepsis in the pediatric patient is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide constituting a public health problem. Early diagnosis and treatment are fundamental pillars to improve its prognosis.
Objective: to characterize, from a clinicoepidemiological viewpoint, the patients with sepsis treated at the "Raymundo Castro Morales" Pediatric Hospital of Puerto Padre, Las Tunas, Cuba, from January 2017 to December 2018.
Methods: a retrospective descriptive study was performed with the patients diagnosed with sepsis and treated at the aforementioned institution and during the period stated in the objective. The sample consisted of the 137 patients with elements of secondary systemic response from an infection. The results were analyzed according to descriptive statistics.
Results: it was discreetly more frequent in male patients (55,5 %) and in the group under 1 year of age and the 1 to 4 age group, both with 50 cases each. The incidence of sepsis was decreasing as age advanced. 54 % were admitted from the community with the diagnosis of sepsis. According to the stage of sepsis, 67,9 % of the cases had infection. 64,2 % had received antibiotic treatment before the diagnosis of sepsis. 71,5 % progressed satisfactorily to treatment.
Conclusions: the clinicoepidemiological variables of patients with sepsis treated at the pediatric hospital of Puerto Padre were characterized, where most of them progressed satisfactorily, without deaths from this cause.Downloads
