Background: a re-emergence of syphilis has recently been observed in many countries of the world. At the provincial hospital of Las Tunas there is an increase in the incidence of reactive serologies in pregnant women.
Objective: to characterize the pregnant women, puerperae and newborns with reactive serology treated at the “Dr. Ernesto Guevara de la Serna” General Teaching Hospital during the years 2017 and 2018.
Methods: a prospective longitudinal descriptive study was carried out at the aforementioned institution and during the period herein declared. 107 patients were included: pregnant women and puerperae, as well as newborns of mothers with reactive serologies during pregnancy. The data were analyzed according to descriptive statistics.
Results: the highest incidence occurred in pregnant women of the 15 to 30 age group, living in rural districts and with a medium level of education. 36,4 % of the affected ones had a history of reactive serology in previous pregnancies. 44,8 % corresponded to biological false positives and 55,2 % to gestational syphilis. 56 % of the patients with syphilis or false positive biology had a personal pathological history of another disease. The relationship between spouses and patients notified with syphilis was 55,2 %. As for postpartum serologies, 43,8 % were reactive. Newborns without skin lesions and minor reactive serology to the mother accounted for 74,3 %.
Conclusions: clinical and epidemiological aspects were characterized in pregnant women, puerperae and newborns with reactive serology.
