Five years study of morbidity and mortality in preterm infants

Background: preterm labor is a health problem all over the world. It contributes to approximately 75 % of the perinatal mortality, besides influencing on the life quality of the children who survive.Objective: to characterize aspects related to the morbidity and mortality in preterm labor, in neonates born in "Dr. Ernesto Guevara" Hospital from January, 2010 to December, 2014.
Methods: a descriptive and longitudinal study was carried out. The study population was composed of the neonates born with gestational age lower than 37 weeks, in place and time mentioned above.
Results:a total of 1321 preterm labors with born alive infants were carried out, watching an increase from 4,9 % in 2010 to 6,3 % in 2014, as well as a total 1462 low birth weight for an index of 6,5 %. Out of the 86 deceased in the period, 67 of them were from preterm deliveries, for a 77,9 %. The most frequent causes related to prematurity were spontaneous labor, premature rupture of membranes and severe worsening preeclampsia. The main causes of death were: immaturity, sepsis, and malformations. There were 47 births with gestational age lower than 28 weeks, with a survival of 38,2 %.
Conclusions: prematurity increased in the last years and it is related to more than 75 % of the neonatal mortality. Survival of those lower than 28 weeks was fine.
