Characterization of elderly people with dementia syndrome and their caregivers

Background: it is estimated that in the next 30 years the demands of care for people with dementia will exceed 10 times the current needs, which is an unprecedented challenge for Cuban society.
Objective: to characterize the elderly with dementia syndrome of the municipality of San Miguel del Padrón of Havana, as well as their caregivers.
Methods: an observational cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out at the six health districts of the aforementioned municipality, from 2013 to 2015. The sample was made up of 329 elderly people with dementia syndrome and their caregivers, selected by intentional non-probabilistic sampling. To gather the information on the elderly with dementia the following instruments were used: clinical dementia rating scale, Katz index, Lawton and Brody scale and Cummings’ neuropsychiatric inventory. In the caregiver: the caregiver characterization questionnaire and the Beck depression inventory.
Results: in the elderly with dementia, the female sex predominated, between 80-89 years, with Alzheimer's dementia in a moderate stage, total dependence, mild psychological and behavioral symptoms, urinary incontinence and pressure ulcers. In caregivers: prevalence of the female sex, between 40-59 years, married, daughters and with a regular economic situation. They suffered from chronic illnesses and depression, they took care during 1-4 years for more than 12 hours a day, they lived with the patient they attended, without previous experience, little support and no economic benefit.
Conclusions: it was possible to characterize the elderly with dementia and their caregivers included in the study.
