Risk factors associated with oral cancer in patients of a family doctor’s office

Background: identifying and working to reduce the modifiable risk factors associated with oral cancer is a priority of the dental services. The incidence of this type of cancer tends to increase in the municipality of Jobabo.
Objective: to characterize the incidence of risk factors associated with oral cancer and lesions of the buccal cavity, in patients of the family doctor’s office “Viet Nam III” of the municipality of Jobabo, province of Las Tunas, from October 2018 to August 2019.
Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out. The universe consisted of 172 patients older than 20 years belonging to the aforementioned office, who went to the dental consultation during the study period. The sample was made up of 98 patients with risk factors of oral cancer. The following variables were assessed: age groups, sex, risk factors associated with oral cancer and type of lesions.
Results: both sexes were represented by 49 patients; 51 % belonged to the 35 to 59 age group. Hot food intake of was found in 55 patients and was the most identified risk factor for oral cancer. Leukoplakia was found in two females and two males. In male patients older than 60 years two fibromas, a papilloma a metastatic tumor of parotid and an epidermoid squamous cell carcinoma were confirmed.
Conclusions: the main risk factors associated with oral cancer in the study sample were characterized.
