Skills of the students training in dentistry for oral health promotion

Abstract

Background: within the functions of the general dentist, oral health promotion is the cornerstone that precedes prevention, healing and rehabilitation. The students training in dentistry must be prepared to this aim.

Objective: to implement a system of activities to strengthen the preparedness of students training in dentistry for the oral health promotion in the different contexts of action.

Methods: an intervention study was carried out with the 49 fifth-year dental students, at the University of Medical Sciences of Las Tunas, during the 2019-2020 academic year. The study included a diagnosis of the knowledge of procedures and skills to implement the actions of oral health promotion. A system of training activities was designed and implemented. The impact of the system was assessed.

Results: more than half of the students training in dentistry showed a low initial level of preparedness to carry out the actions of oral health promotion. All of them participated in educative chats in the dental chair, while only 15 (30,6 %) did it in community activities. A system with ten guiding activities was implemented to strengthen their preparedness, after which a marked increase in knowledge and skills was achieved. At the end only 8 (16,3 %) were graded as regular and none of them was graded as bad.

Conclusions: a successful system of guiding activities was implemented, which increased the preparedness of dentists-to-be to carry out actions of oral health promotion.
