Abstract

Background: omic technologies have led to changes in the medical practice to the point that there is already talk of a genomic, personalized or precision medicine. For its implementation the training of health professionals in these topics is required.

Objective: to describe the syllabus of a subject proposed to deal with omic technologies as content in undergraduate medical studies.

Methods: the general aims were derived from the second year, according to Resolution 2 of 2018 of the Ministry of Higher Education. Unit aims, as well as systems of knowledge, skills and values were also considered. Methodological guidelines, a learning assessment system and updated bibliography were proposed.

Results: the proposal of the subject has a total of 30 contact hours, distributed in the lesson types: conference, practical lesson, seminar and workshop. The final assessment is the presentation of a final paper. It promotes the basic-clinical relationship and the systematization of the contents treated by precedent and consequent disciplines and subjects. It deepens in issues barely treated in the major, such as genomic sequencing, genome edition, pharmacogenetics and bioinformatics. The subject articulates with the curricular strategies defined for the degree, especially those of research and informatics, as well as mastery of English and the educative nature of learning.

Conclusions: the proposed subject may be included as part of required or optional/elective courses, and be taught in an extended or concentrated way. It is an option for the treatment of the omic technologies and precision medicine in undergraduate medical education.
