Effects of COVID-19 on affective emotional states of the adult population of Puerto Padre

Background: adverse outcomes for mental health in confinement and epidemic situations are not usually evident; therefore, a systematic approach is required for the identification of cases and the selection of appropriate interventions.
Objective: to characterize aspects of affective emotional states and determine their relationship with some sociodemographic factors, in the adult population of Puerto Padre, as a consequence of the context generated by COVID-19.
Methods: an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional and correlational study was carried out with 206 subjects over 18 years of age, selected at random, from six family doctor’s offices of the health district of Puerto Padre, during the month of May 2020. For the psychological study of the emotional affective states (stress, anxiety and depression) the DASS-21 scale was applied. Simple descriptive statistical tests were used, and the t-Student and Chi-square tests, as well as and Pearson's correlation coefficient were used to compare variables.
Results: 32,52 % of the studied subjects presented at least one of the three studied emotional states. The three affective conditions showed a significant relationship with a history of mental illness. The correlation analysis showed that there was a significant and positive association among the three emotional affective states, finding the greatest association between anxiety and stress.
Conclusions: the relationship between emotional affective states and socio-demographic factors was determined during the COVID-19 pandemic in the studied population.
