Abstract

A primary tumor can be a risk factor for the development of another one, either due to its embryonic relationship, adverse results of previous oncological therapies or due to a combination of risk factors. We present the case of a 69-year-old type 2 diabetic male patient from Senegal, who presented complaining of abdominal pain and iron-deficiency anemia of months of progress. On palpation, an elongated mass was found on the right side. The fecal occult blood test was positive. The radiological study revealed an “apple bite” image in the ascending colon, corroborated by colonoscopy and biopsy, which showed adenocarcinoma of the colon. Abdomino-pelvic computed tomography and positron-emission tomography (PET) were performed, detecting bone and lymph node metastases and a suspicious image of a tumor in an area of the prostate. A second neoplasm was later confirmed by biopsy. Both of them shared risk factors. The patient was operated on, the colon tumor was removed, and both tumors were treated with adjuvant therapy. One year later, progress studies with PET and radionucleotides were performed, which showed remission of both tumors and metastatic lesions. The patient is followed up annually by the multidisciplinary oncology and endocrinology groups.
