Medical attention to patients with dental emergencies during the epidemic stage of the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract

Background: before situations of dental emergencies, contact medical attention cannot be postponed. The COVID-19 pandemic has imposed the reorganization of the dental services.

Objective: to characterize variables related to patients that were treated complaining of dental emergencies at the “3 de Octubre” Dental Clinic of Las Tunas, during the epidemic stage of COVID-19.

Methods: a longitudinal descriptive study was carried out at the aforementioned dental clinic, from March 26 through June 22, 2020. The studied variables were age groups, sex, month of attention, complaint of emergency, treatment and patients with respiratory symptoms. Descriptive statistics was used for the data analysis.

Results: there was a majority of female visits in every month with 56,3 % of the attentions in the period; the 19 to 59 age group prevailed (65,6 %). Dental caries was the most frequent chief emergency complaint (76 %); medication healing prevailed (49,3 %), followed by natural and traditional medicine (36,9). Out of the assisted patients 25 (3,33 %) presented respiratory symptoms, with predominance of cough (52 %).

Conclusions: the variables of patients treated due to dental emergencies were characterized, at the “3 de Octubre” Dental Clinic, during the COVID-19 epidemic.
