Follow-up of patients with sexually transmitted infections in the municipality of Las Tunas, Cuba

Background: according to the registered statistical data, there is an increase in the incidence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the municipality of Las Tunas. The patient with STI is the fundamental mainstay to stop the epidemiological chain.
Objective: to describe variables related to the follow-up of patients with STIs in the municipality of Las Tunas, province of the same name, Cuba, from 2018 to 2020.
Methods: a descriptive, retrospective study was carried out at the aforementioned municipality and during the period previously declared. The sample consisted of 7505 patients identified with some STI. The variables to be assessed were: age group, sex, report of condom use, declaration of extramarital contact, sexual orientation, source of reported infection, visit to follow-up consultations and accuracy of the information about the contacts.
Results: the 25 to 59 age group was the most affected one (69,3 %). There was predominance of those who reported to use the condom sometimes (65,1 %), 34,15 % said that they always use it. The majority was heterosexual (83,78 %). 53,61 % reported not to know the source of infection. Their visit to follow-up was influenced by some health professional in 60,2 % of the cases. Incomplete information about the contacts predominated (89,43 %).
Conclusions: the variables of the follow-up of patients with STIs were described showing indicators that contribute negatively in the fulfillment of the programs for the prevention of these diseases.
