Background: pediatric semiology has essential characteristics that make it different and special as pediatric content.
Objective: to characterize the treatment of the pediatric semiology content in the teaching-learning process of pediatrics in the major of medicine, at the University of Medical Sciences of Las Tunas.
Methods: a descriptive quali-quantitative study was carried out at the aforementioned university during the academic year 2017-2018. On the quantitative side the study population included 52 teachers of pediatrics, 76 fourth-year and 33 sixth-year medical students. 24 minutes of the subject staff, two final records, four minutes of the methodological activities, a sample of 135 theoretical exams and 78 medical records were checked. Dimensions and indicators were established to which a grading scale was applied.
Results: in the professors there was prevailing evidence on the use of traditional teaching methods and a preference for theoretical activities. The students admitted to have reached the subject of pediatrics without enough knowledge of the healthy children and that the teaching of the physical examination on children did not have preference in the previous training. The dimensions: treatment of the knowledge system of pediatric semiology, the training of semiology skills and the axiological-motivational training in the teaching-learning process of pediatrics had a low grading scale. There was evidence of insufficiencies in the treatment of the pediatric semiology content, starting with its selection, sequencing and methodology in the dynamics of the teaching-learning process.
Conclusions: the treatment of the pediatric semiology content was characterized.
