Risk factors and iron-deficiency anemia in 6-month still-on-milk children of the municipality of Jiguaní, Granma

Background: despite the fact that there is a comprehensive plan for prevention and control of anemia in Cuba, there is still a high incidence in still-on-milk children of the municipality of Jiguaní, Granma.
Objective: to identify the risk factors associated with the onset of iron-deficiency anemia in 6-month still-on-milk children belonging to the “Edor de los Reyes” Teaching Polyclinic of Jiguaní, from January through June 2020.
Methods: an analytical case-control study was carried out at the aforementioned health district and during the period herein declared. The sample was made up of 26 6-month still-on-milk children with iron-deficiency anemia in the case group and 52 children of the same age without anemia in the control group. Prenatal, natal and postnatal variables were assessed.
Results: in both groups there was a prevalence of single pregnancy without presenting hemorrhages. The total mothers received prophylaxis with anti-anemic drugs. Anemia during pregnancy and without exclusive breastfeeding were present in 16 (61.5%) of the case group. Low birthweight still-on-milk children and cesarean section showed association with the onset of anemia, besides the mothers that presented anemia during pregnancy and no exclusive breastfeeding. Low birthweight children represented 88% of the onset of anemia.
Conclusions: the risk factors associated with the onset of iron-deficiency anemia were identified in 6-month still-on-milk children included in the study.
