Background: a safe and risk-free maternity for mother and child, in stage of COVID-19 epidemic, requires specific care and competence by the nursing staff.
Objective: to design a guide for the development of obstetric competences of 3rd-year nursing students for prenatal care in the community with a preventive approach to COVID-19.
Methods: a development research was carried out during the door-to-door active screening of respiratory symptoms due to COVID-19 at the “Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima” University Polyclinic of Las Tunas, from March through June 2020. An intentional sample of 10 3rd-year nursing students, who were attending pregnant women, was deeply interviewed to identify the learning needs. The protocols for COVID-19 and management of pregnant women in the community were checked. A committee of 13 experts was chosen who, in workshops of critical criterion, defined the knowledge to be acquired by the students.
Results: 27 tasks and 15 specific competences were defined in the guide. They responded to prenatal care with a preventive approach to COVID-19 and included three dimensions: recognition of the modifications and complications of the maternal organism and the clinical manifestations of the disease; behavioral changes to promote in pregnant women and their family to create a safe and risk-free self-care; and the inclusion of prevention activities to live in a community aware of adequate sanitary practices.
Conclusions: the guide on obstetric competence of nursing students was designed.
