Characteristics of burn patients with complications treated at the Las Tunas provincial hospital

Abstract

Background: burns represent one of the most serious and disabling accidents, they are one of the most devastating conditions found in medicine, producing physical and psychological affectations in patients of all ages.

Objective: to characterize clinical and epidemiological variables in burned patients with complications, admitted to the General Teaching Hospital "Dr. Ernesto Guevara de la Serna", from Las Tunas, between January 2019 and December 2021.

Methods: an observational, descriptive and retrospective study of cases was carried out. The universe was made up of 266 burn patients who were admitted in burns and plastic surgery unit of the hospital and the period of time declared in the objective. The sample included the 88 patients who had complications. The data was processed according to descriptive statistics.

Results: complications in burn patients occurred more frequently in males (59.1 %) and those over 60 years of age (42 %). Fire was the predominant causative agent (60.2 %), followed by boiling liquids (31.8 %). The combined locations were the most frequent (69.3 %). Serious (39.7 %) and very serious (34.1 %) patients, according to the Cuban prognostic index, were the majority. Local sepsis (73.8 %) and deformities (59.1 %) were the predominant complications.

Conclusions: clinical and epidemiological aspects of burn patients with complications included in the study were characterized.
