Myiasis in the lower left limb
Keywords:
MYIASIS, DIPTERA, INFECTIONSAbstract
Myiasis is considered any disease whose etiological agent is the larval stage of various types of diptera. This condition occurs predominantly in tropical and subtropical regions. Basically, its diagnosis is based on clinical and epidemiological findings. Treatment depends on the severity of the infection. Sometimes, complicated cases require surgical treatment. We present the case of a 68-year-old male patient, with a history of chronic alcoholism and diabetes mellitus, who came to the clinic presenting a wound in the left lower limb, which was never sutured and progressively worsened despite self-medication with amoxicillin. With the use of intravenous general anesthesia, toilet of the cavity was performed, the presence of fly larvae was visualized and 18 larvae were extracted. He presented favorable clinical and surgical evolution. Myiasis is rarely acquired in the province, but it must be taken into account when dealing with infected wounds in patients with risk factors.Downloads
