Acquired erythroderma cases in adults assisted in Las Tunas Provincial Hospital, a decade study

Background: erythroderma is an inflammatory skin syndrome characterized by desquamation and erythema in more than 90 % of the body surface. Sometimes, it represents the final stage of certain adult skin diseases.
Objective: to describe a series of erythroderma cases in patients admitted to the Dermatology Service of the General Teaching Hospital "Dr. Ernesto Guevara de la Serna" in Las Tunas, from January 2012 to January 2022.
Methods: an observational, descriptive and retrospective study was carried out in the patients, the hospital and time defined in the objective. The sample was made up of 50 patients diagnosed with erythroderma. The information was obtained from the patients' medical records.
Results: the male sex prevailed (62 %), patients aged 60 years and older (64 %) and those of urban origin (38 %). The absence of associated dermatosis was more frequent (24 %), contact dermatitis was the associated dermatosis present in a great number of cases (22 %), predominantly male (65.79 %). The most used systemic treatment was the combination of steroids, antihistamines and analgesics (62 %), while the topical treatment was steroid creams (64 %).
Conclusions: clinical and epidemiological aspects were characterized in patients diagnosed with erythroderma.
