Abstract

Background: scientific publications contribute to producing and certifying knowledge. They are indicators of development in research and technical scientific activity.

Objective: to characterize the scientific production with genetic content, carried out by the professionals of the Provincial Department of Medical Genetics in Las Tunas from 2008 to 2021.

Methods: an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in the department declared in the objective and attached to the Provincial Pediatric Hospital "Mártires de Las Tunas", with an average potential of 20 professionals per year. The sample comprised the 59 articles published in the period of the study and that related to genetic issues. The variables assessed included: year of publication, type of article, scientific journal and subject by specialty. Descriptive statistics was used in data processing.

Results: a total of 59 scientific articles were registered, highlighting year 2016 with 12 (20 %). Articles on prenatal genetic diagnosis (35.5 %) and clinical genetics (34.4 %) prevailed. The original articles were more frequent (57.7 %), followed by case presentations (13.5 %). The largest number of articles (73.8 %) was published in the Electronic Journal "Dr. Zoilo E. Marinello Vidaurreta".

Conclusions: the Provincial Department of Medical Genetics in Las Tunas has developed a growing scientific production on genetics, but it is still insufficient, considering its scientific potential.
