Fundamentals: ethics in health care is a fundamental pillar to ensure the confidentiality and privacy of patients. Nurses play a key role in protecting sensitive information in emergency services.
Objective: to analyze the influence of ethics on the management of information and privacy of critical patients in the emergency unit of the IESS Esmeraldas Basic Hospital.
Method: a descriptive study with a mixed approach was conducted. Surveys were applied to 50 patients and 21 nursing professionals. In addition, interviews were conducted with health personnel to understand their level of knowledge and application of ethical principles in their daily practice.
Results: 70 % of the patients reported they were treated with kindness and respect, while 86 % felt their information was handled professionally. However, only 43 per cent of health personnel reported having received specific training in confidentiality and 81 per cent indicated they were familiar with the current privacy regulations.
Conclusions: confidentiality is perceived as adequate, but shortcomings were identified in staff training and implementation of protocols that strengthen the protection of patient data.
