Background: burnout syndrome is a response to chronic stress that affects professionals in direct contact with other people. This syndrome has become increasingly common, especially in the educational field where work and emotional pressures are high.
Objective: to analyze the burnout syndrome in teachers of an educational unit in the city of Esmeraldas.
Methods: the research adopted a quantitative and descriptive approach, a cross-sectional cohort type, using the Maslach questionnaire to evaluate the dimensions of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal fulfillment. Fifty surveys were applied to a census sample of teachers with more than 5 years of service in the institution, and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistical tools.
Results: it was found that 12 % of teachers have burnout syndrome, with a higher prevalence in women (67 %) and teachers aged 41 to 65. The causal factors include high temperatures in classrooms (48 %), low wages (44 %) and overwork (26 %). The most common symptoms are mental burnout (20 %), headache and anxiety (18 %), and difficulty sleeping (16 %).
Conclusions: 12 % of the teachers suffer from burnout syndrome, and work and emotional factors such as work environment and task overload are key factors in its appearance. It is crucial to implement preventive strategies and management of burnout to improve working conditions and teacher welfare.
