Evaluation of the MNT course for dentists and clinical application in Periodontics

Background: Natural and Traditional Medicine is a valid therapeutic alternative, particularly useful in environments with material limitations. Its application in stomatology provides complementary options for the management of periodontal diseases, with low cost and accessibility.
Objectives: to assess the impact of an elective course in Natural and Traditional Medicine on the training of specialists and residents in General Comprehensive Stomatology and Periodontics, as a response to the scarcity of resources and as an integrative therapeutic option.
Methods: a quasi-experimental educational intervention study (pre-test/post-test) was conducted from May to July 2024 at the "3 de octubre" Dental Clinic in Las Tunas. Twenty-five professionals from Comprehensive General Stomatology and Periodontics participated. Perception surveys, knowledge tests, and clinical application assessments were used. The analysis included descriptive statistics and clinical application analysis.
Results: general knowledge about Traditional and Natural Medicine increased significantly from 36 % to 88 % (p < 0.001). The ability to apply this knowledge practically increased from 20 % to 76 % (p < 0.001). 92 % of participants considered the course highly relevant, reporting a satisfaction rating of 4.7/5.0. Patients showed good acceptance of complementary therapies.
Conclusions: the elective course in Traditional and Natural Medicine proved to be an effective training tool, significantly improving the knowledge and practical skills of professionals.
