Teaching strategy to assess the level of knowledge in diabetic patients with periodontal disease

Introduction: despite the established bidirectional relationship between diabetes mellitus and periodontal disease, patients' lack of awareness of this interaction limits the effectiveness of preventive strategies.
Objective: to design a didactic strategy to improve the level of knowledge in diabetic patients with periodontal disease.
Methods: a technological innovation study was conducted at the University of Medical Sciences of Las Tunas between August 2024 and August 2025. Four of the eleven steps described by Hernández Sampieri were followed in developing the didactic strategy. The complex variable, "level of knowledge in patients with periodontal disease and diabetes mellitus," was operationalized and defined. The Delphi method was implemented with a panel of five experts in the final version of the strategy.
Results: the designed teaching strategy presents a comprehensive approach encompassing the conceptual, procedural, and attitudinal dimensions of learning; an active methodology based on experiential workshops and personalized sessions; a multimodal design combining specialized human resources, physical materials, and audiovisual aids; a tripartite evaluation system including diagnostic, formative, and summative components; and interdisciplinary collaboration between dental and medical professionals in the comprehensive management of diabetes and periodontal disease.
Conclusions: The design of the teaching strategy for diabetic patients with periodontal disease facilitates education that improves understanding of the bidirectional relationship between both diseases, optimizes oral hygiene, and improves periodontal and metabolic clinical indicators.
