The cultural-cognitive-emotional-existential logic in teaching the Nursing Process within Basic Nursing: a critical review
Keywords:

Background: The Nursing Process (NP) is presented across almost all nursing education worldwide as the discipline's own method and the methodological backbone of care, and it is taught early within Basic Nursing or Fundamentals of Nursing; yet the cultural-cognitive-emotional-existential logic that its teaching instals in the learner is seldom questioned.
Objective: To analyze, at the global, Ecuadorian and School of Nursing of the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador, Esmeraldas campus (PUCESE) levels, the logic underlying the program and curriculum of NP teaching, from the categories of pathogenic reason and cultural-cognitive-emotional-existential blindness.
Methods: A critical, argumentative, non-systematic review was conducted, combining a bibliographic mapping of PubMed/MEDLINE, SciELO, Redalyc, Dialnet and institutional documentary sources for the 2000-2026 period with a philosophical-hermeneutic analysis guided by the referred framework and organized at three levels: global, Ecuadorian and institutional.
Results: The NP is embedded and taught at all three levels, but it is predominantly reduced to a linear five-step algorithm, taxonomic labelling (NANDA-NIC-NOC) and a care-plan-as-document, under the inertia of a technical, neo-positivist approach. Ecuadorian evidence shows a method learned as steps to complete rather than as reasoning, with deficiencies in assessment and self-regulation. So configured, NP teaching produces blindness across the four registers —cultural, cognitive, emotional and existential— and operates in the four areas —personal, relational, institutional and social—.
