Characteristics of patients with malocclusions treated in “3 de octubre” Teaching Dental Office

Background: it is considered that approximately 50 % of children have some kind of dental malocclusion which requires orthodontic treatment.
Objective: to describe the behavior of dental malocclusions in patients treated in the orthodontic service of “3 de octubre” teaching dental office in Las Tunas province from January to December, 2014.
Methods: a retrospective and descriptive study was carried out in the place and time period mentioned above. The study population comprised the 139 treated patients.
Results: females were the most affected ones in both age groups; in the group from 6 to 11 years old, more than half the sample presented Angle’s class I; the most common decidua molar relation was the mesial; the most frequent malocclusion in the vertical plane was the increased exceeding and dental squash was present in more than half the sample.
Conclusions: it was possible to describe the behavior of dental malocclusions; most of the patients show good skeletal balance, prevailing vertical malocclusions and squash.
