Abstract

Since time immemorial, Allium sativum, commonly known as garlic, has been used for its widely known medicinal properties. It has multiple beneficial effects as an antimicrobial, hypolipidemic, antithrombotic and antihypertensive agent, as well as for its antitumoral activity, among others. The sulfur compounds contained by garlic, mainly alliin and ajoene, constitute the active principles responsible for the biological activities herein mentioned. A bibliographic review was carried out using the resources available in the Infomed network, specifically Ebsco, PubMed, Hinari and SciELO, by means of which the following databases were accessed: Medline, Academic Search Premier, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and MedicLatina. The present state of the research on the use of garlic in medicine was checked. There are scientific evidences that back up its use, proving the effects mentioned above. In the last years there is a prevalence of articles focused on the study of the different formulations of garlic: mature extract, aqueous extract, oil and raw garlic. Some of the consulted references admit that there are methodological limitations in these research works. The consensus is that the different formulations made up from garlic must be used as a complementary treatment.
