Background: information and communication technologies offer useful opportunities to increase the available learning contents and resources for teachers and students. Web 2.0 allows interactivity among users, who can participate in the construction of knowledge.
Objective: to describe the applications and four examples of websites in the dissemination of teaching contents and for undergraduate and continuing medical education.
Methods: four websites available for Infomed network users were reviewed: Enlaces compartidos (Shared links), Medicina genómica (Genomic Medicine), Inmunología (Immunology) and Repositorio de artículos en inmunología (Repository of Articles in Immunology). Their contents and resources were assessed by categories: news, pages, links, books, articles, journals, organizations and others.
Results: in all the websites revised, one is sent, by means of hyperlinks, to the primary sources of information. A comprehensive collection of information resources is made available for users, and it is useful for teaching, health care and research in several medical specialties, which includes more than 900 scientific papers, about a hundred books or chapters, more than 40 databases and algorithms, more than 70 journals, 20 guidelines of clinical practice, as well as institutions, scientific societies and patients’ organizations. Their application in medical education is being discussed.
Conclusions: websites can significantly contribute to medical education by increasing the number of contents available for teachers and students.
