Some genetic, clinical and epidemiological variables in full-term multiple pregnancies

Abstract

Background: bigeminal pregnancy has increased its incidence over the last years and it is considered a health risk due to the perinatal implications for both mother and fetus, as well as for the congenital defects associated with them.

Objective: to describe some genetic, clinical and epidemiological variables in full- term multiple pregnancies treated in the provincial department of medical genetics in Las Tunas.

Methods: a retrospective and descriptive study was carried out from 2012 to 2015, using the Cuban Registry of Community Congenital Malformations of the Genetic Network of Las Tunas. The universe was made up of the 20463 births during this period and the sample included the 130 full-term bigeminal pregnancies.

Results: the rate of twins at birth in 2015 increased 11 units with respect to 2012 (16,1 per each 1000 live births vs. 5,1 per each 1000 live births); the infant mortality rate in twins was below 0,3 per each 1000 live births; the birth weight showed results below the ideal one, noticing an average and a standard deviation of 2331,3 + 495g; the municipality with the highest incidence of multiple pregnancies was Las Tunas with 61, followed by Puerto Padre with 19 and Menéndez with 15. Congenital defects showed an increasing tendency, being the musculoskeletal system the most affected one.

Conclusions: bigeminal pregnancies prevalence has showed an increasing tendency, with a very low infant mortality rate, yet work must be directed to increase their birth weight. Congenital defects are not representative in this study group.
