Background: cataract is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in the world. Thanks to "Operación Milagro", this surgery is offered free in Cuba, despite its high cost.
Objective: to describe the results got in patients who underwent cataract surgery at the Ophthalmology Center in Las Tunas from January to December, 2015.
Methods: a retrospective, longitudinal and descriptive study was carried out in patients who underwent cataract surgery in the place and time period defined above. The study population consisted of 791 patients who underwent the operation through tunnel and who were selected by systematic probabilistic sampling.
Results: 31,5 % of the patients were between 70 and 79 years old and 57,3 % were females. The visual result was favorable when comparing it before and after the operation: visual acuity achieved in 456 patients averaged between 0,7 and 0,9 in Snellen chart. The refractive defect that prevailed was the myopic astigmatism in 32 % of the patients studied.
Conclusions: there was an obvious refractive improvement with the insertion of the intraocular lens during the operation. The prevailing defect after the cataract surgery was myopic astigmatism.
